"FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology)
designs accessible, innovative programs to build self-confidence, knowledge and
life skills while motivating young people to pursue opportunities in science,
technology and engineering." Programs include:
- The FIRST Robotics Competition---an
exciting, multinational competition that teams professionals and young
people to solve an engineering design problem in an intense and competitive
way. The program is a life-changing, career-molding experience—and a lot
of fun. In 2003 the competition will reach more than 20,000 students on over
800 teams in 24 competitions. Our teams come from Canada, Brazil, the U.K.,
and almost every U.S. state. The competitions are high-tech spectator
sporting events, the result of lots of focused brainstorming, real-world
teamwork, dedicated mentoring, project timelines, and deadlines.
- FIRST LEGO League---"Our
goal is to ensure that children of all ages across the United States have
the opportunity to discover the excitement and rewards of science, math and
technology," states Dean Kamen, founder of FIRST, "We need to show
kids that it's more fun to design and create a video game than to play
one." FIRST is meeting this challenge with high school students, and is
now expanding its scope to younger students with the FIRST Jr. Robotics
initiative. FIRST LEGO League, modeled after the Robotics Competition, is
the current Jr. Robotics program.
- Classes
offered to Homeschool Groups---team-based, half-day to 5-day programs in
the Manchester, New Hampshire facility. They can be scheduled any weekday for 10
or more students.
- FIRST Discoveries Summer
